Use Picture Cards to Structure Your Day
For many children, everyday routines can feel overwhelming. Getting ready for school in the morning or winding down after a busy day often includes several steps that are easy to forget. Picture cards can be a wonderful support tool that helps children see what’s coming, carry out tasks more independently, and build strong daily habits.
Why picture cards work
Children often understand and remember better when information is presented visually. Picture cards make routines clear and predictable, which reduces stress and helps children feel secure.
-
Prepare for what’s next: By looking at the cards in order, the child knows what will happen, whether it’s brushing teeth, packing a schoolbag, or setting the table.
-
Guide through the task: Each card acts like a step-by-step reminder, making it easier for the child to complete routines without constant adult supervision.
-
Build lasting routines: With regular use, children start to remember the sequence, which helps them develop independence and confidence.
A morning routine example
Imagine the start of a school day. Instead of repeated reminders from adults, the child can look at the picture cards and follow them one by one:
-
Get dressed
-
Eat breakfast
-
Brush teeth
-
Pack the schoolbag
-
Put on shoes and jacket
Each step is shown with a simple illustration. The child can point to or turn over each card as they finish, which gives a sense of achievement and completion.
Schooldog’s routine cards
To make daily routines even more engaging, we’ve created picture cards featuring Schooldog — a friendly dog who models before- and after-school activities. Seeing Schooldog brush teeth, pack a backpack, or hang up a jacket makes routines fun and relatable.
These Schooldog routine cards will soon be available as a PDF download for members of My Schooldog Club. They are designed to support children in becoming more independent, while adding a touch of playfulness to everyday life.
