Finger Knitting = Calm Hands & Moments Together

Finger knitting is a simple and meaningful activity — both for children and for dogs.

For children, the slow and repetitive movements support fine motor skills, focus, and emotional regulation. The rhythm of working with yarn helps the body settle and creates a natural sense of calm.

For the dog, this can become a quiet and cozy shared moment. If the dog enjoys lying next to the child — for example in a sofa corner — finger knitting can be a hyggelig (cozy and peaceful) activity to do side by side. The key is always that the dog feels safe and comfortable being there.

We often use leftover yarn when we finger knit.
Sometimes we choose wool, other times cotton.
We might use thick yarn — or combine strands from several skeins at once.

It all depends on what we plan to make for the dog and what yarn we already have available.

For some of the toys we create, we buy specific yarn that fits the exact purpose of the project. Many of the toys we make are designed to be machine felted, which means we use wool that can felt in the washing machine — though not all projects require this.

Finger knitting is valuable in itself — but it can also become something practical and thoughtful for your dog.
